Pink Guide To Adoption

The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) has published a guide for lesbians and gay men who wish to adopt - The Pink Guide to Adoption for Lesbians and Gay Men

The guide was originally published in 2009, however given the recent press coverage regarding adoption reform and increasing the number of adoptions it seems very appropriate to publicise it.

The book addresses some common misconceptions and is an essential step-by-step guide to the adoption process.

Areas covered include adoption by single people and same-sex couples who wish to adopt jointly.

The guide includes case studies of lesbians and gay men going through the adoption process, whether adopting singly or as couples. Incidentially most adoptions seem to be as couples.

It also details the highs and lows of the process and the prejudices that are encountered both during the adoption process and afterwards.

All we can say is that this is highly recommended reading for any lesbians or gay men considering adoption.

With the appointment of Martin Narey (formerly chief executive of Barnardo's) as Ministerial Adviser on Adoption we can all look forward to a major shake-up of the adoption process.

Children will once again be placed at the centre of the process, with their welfare paramount.

What matters is that a child is entering a loving and caring home, somewhere they can grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.

It matters not whether that home is made by a lesbian or gay parent, or two mummies or two daddies.
